This month, a new list has been released of the 500 most powerful supercomputers in the world. Remarkable is the enormous increase in computing power. Not so long ago, the Petaflops (1000 Teraflops) was only a dream, but now six systems on the list have an even higher peak performance. Some of them even exceed the 1 Petaflops by far. Another striking feature is the rise of Chinese supercomputers. The second super on the list is in China. But the US is working hard to stay on top: an ambitious program is underway that should deliver a 100 Petaflops machine by 2015.
