Travel Times for Inland Shipping

For the Dutch start-up 4Shipping, VORtech, together with other partners, developed a tool to predict travel times for inland shipping. The time spent on waiting for ship locks is an important aspect.

The app that 4shipping is developing will make it easier for owners of inland ships to find cargos that they can profitably ship. Accurate predictions of travel times are essential to determine whether traveling to the cargo is feasible. Such a predictions needs to take many things into account, like the waiting times for locks and whether the water on route is deep enough.

The customer

4shipping develops online tools for inland shipping. It helps ship owners to optimize the use of their capacity, to simplify their work and to improve their commercial results.

The challenge

The app that 4shipping is developing will make it easier for owners of inland ships to find cargos that they can profitably ship. Accurate predictions of travel times are essential to determine whether traveling to the cargo is feasible. Such a predictions needs to take many things into account, like the waiting times for locks and whether the water on route is deep enough

The solution

Together with 4Shipping and another supplier, VORtech analysed a large amount of transport data from inland shipping. Based on this data, a preliminary algorithm was developed to predict the travel time for a given route. This algorithms has been implemented in the 4Shipping app in such a way that further improvements can be readily incorporated when new insights emerge.

The result

The new algorithm will shortly be made available in the 4Shipping app. This will give owners of inland ships extra options to determine whether they should travel to an available cargo.
